Dust Housekeeping Trigger

Dust Housekeeping Trigger

A starch mogul brings a housekeeping duty with it. Annex D of NFPA 654 gives the yardstick for characterising a dust layer: immediate cleaning is warranted once a layer of 1/32 inch builds up over at least 5 per cent of the floor area of a facility or any given room, and above 20,000 square feet of floor area a 1,000 square foot layer is the upper limit instead. OSHA quoted that guidance in its 2007 Combustible Dust National Emphasis Program, which OSHA now publishes as an archive document rather than as current policy.

Accumulations on overhead beams, joists, ducts and the tops of equipment count towards that area, and so do vertical surfaces where the dust is adhering.

What this is and is not

  • It is a housekeeping yardstick for the room, expressed as an area of accumulated layer.
  • It is not a hazard assessment. NFPA 654 and NFPA 664 use seventeen parameters to identify a dust explosion hazard and minimum explosible concentration is only the first of them; OSHA’s own record notes that a minimum layer thickness describes the quantity of fugitive dust and not its properties.
  • It is not something a machinery supplier certifies. The site hazard assessment belongs to you and your local specialists.

Enter a floor area and press Work out the trigger.

Vacuum dust extraction ships as part of the CLM-S system. Curing rooms, starch circulation space and the housekeeping roster belong to your own plant layout and utilities.
